Home: Family Connection Through Design
Furniture and advertising to foster communication
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The project team is seeking alternative human-centered solutions to three identified problems related to home space in Hong Kong. By refining the definition of furniture, they can enhance communication both internally and externally. In fact, a lack of communication can easily alienate family members or flatmates living in the same apartment. We have identified three typical scenarios for investigation, namely intergenerational families, home-office/schooling families, and co-living groups.
PROJECT CONCEPT
A user-centered approach for scenario-based design is adopted in the project to ensure the designated development can capture the essence of users’ behaviors and interactions. In order to facilitate communication, we have focused on developing ways of furniture in different tasks. After interviewing three groups of users, several points were listed and targeted to bring about improvement by phases. This project involves students from Higher Diploma programmes who specialize in Furniture, Interior, Product, or Advertising Design. They have contributed to the project by taking responsibilities related to their profession and will have their works exhibited in the Milan Design Week.
More is a convertible sofa. It is suitable for anyone, based on different users’ needs. They can buy different parts separately and modify the form that they want. They can make it larger or smaller.
We have designed the "Lifting Chair", which aims to reconnect the distance between grandparents and grandchildren. It is especially designed for the elderly with just a push of a button, and the "Lifting Chair" can let the elderly sit down and stand up with ease. The chair can also be lowered so tha
Flexible - Lightly twirl the backrests away from facing direction, then they could be re-moulded into partitions. This design allows the chair to come with the flexibility to provide 2 different space modes - either as one love seat, or two partitioned single chairs.
The use of slippery creates unlimited possibilities. The table can be changed into different shapes in response to different situations. If you need more space, you can also request broader space from the other side. We hope to use these actions to start conversations between people.
Double is a dining table that can be switched to a work desk. With a simple flip of the table top, it builds up two separated working areas for the users. The split domains ensure that the users can work in the same space without disturbing each other. It creates two spaces in one world.
Hide & Sit is a trapezoid single seat sofa that can be transformed into a double seat sofa for people who need to work or study from home . With the adjustable design, users can choose to hide or expose themselves at home. When users are working or having a lesson at home, they can close the sofa,
Glide is a sofa that can provide you semi privacy while you are working or studying from home . With the slide-able panel, users have the autonomy to decide on the blocked position. When user starts the video call, the panel can be pulled back to prevent others from being captured by the camera o
